A novel strategic tool for corporate circularity
TEIMAS, a Spanish software company which specialises in technological solutions related to waste, is driving the intelligent waste management push. Launched in 2020, ZERØ, a cloud-based platform that ensures the correct management of waste gives producers increased control over their waste production and management by allowing the traceability of waste data. This allows greater control over regulatory compliance and information that enables better decision making when it comes to sustainability issues.
Circular Economies must have the ability to regulate all elements of industry waste traceability. We have to know what metals we are inheriting from other nations, the extraction and manufacturing conditions, and we have to ensure that no metal or raw materials is wasted on our own soil, within reason, at every stage of the value chain. It is software advancements like TEIMAS’s ZERØ that is good news for European industry, and we applaud TEIMAS.

Turning waste data into actionable information
How does it work? ZERØ has a functionality based on blockchain technology that ensures the traceability of waste data generated by companies, certifying its life cycle. In addition, the ZERØ platform interprets and organises all types of waste information, regardless of its format, thus streamlining the creation and management of all environmental documentation. It also allows the implementation of different roles and levels of authorisation for its users and the visualisation of business indicators through personalised dashboards, converting waste data into practical information for decision-making.
All these features make the TEIMAS tool a cost-effective technology that contributes to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2021, the impact of the ZERØ platform was recognised by the Solar Impulse Foundation label, which is awarded to clean technology solutions that help companies to meet SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) and SDG 12 (Responsible production and consumption).
An innovative project boosted by EIT RawMaterials
TEIMAS received EIT RawMaterials Booster funding and COVID-19 Booster financing to support the development of the ZERØ platform and improve its key functionalities. ZERØ features include calculating waste treatment impact on the carbon footprint, circularity KPIs, and blockchain integration for waste traceability.
As a result, TEIMAS accelerated the implementation of the ZERØ platform in several multinationals on a Software as a Service (SaaS) basis, providing control, regulatory compliance and information for strategic decision-making. The digital tool developed by TEIMAS has thus become a strong ally in the development of corporate climate policies for the environment in a transparent and verifiable way. This is certainly a competitive advantage in a society increasingly aware of the need to protect the environment.
Founded in 2008 by four computer engineers from the University of A Coruña, today its clients include the Spanish public administration, more than 700 centres specialising in professional waste management and several multinationals from different sectors (textile, telecommunications, food and energy).
