Fraunhofer is hosting The RTO Innovation Summit together with nine other European Research and Technology Organisations (RTO). Five thematic areas will be explored, in line with the five clusters of the “Global Challenges and Industrial Competitiveness” pillar, the heart of Horizon Europe for RTOs. Fraunhofer will highlight the impact and importance of collaborative applied research and present suggestions for future topics and technologies in the next Framework Programme.

EIT RawMaterials Community at Circular Systems session

The Ellen MacArthur foundation defines a circular economy as an economy that is restorative and regenerative by design. Today, the analysis of our economy shows that despite some initial efforts, circularity is still only in its infancy. The dominant economic model still considers a strongly linear thinking where end-of-pipe solutions are implemented with the aim of taking back valuable materials. Transitioning to a circular economy does not only consist in reducing the negative impacts of the linear economy, it will require a systemic shift in the technical, economic and social spheres. The transition towards a circular economy will require capacities in rethinking the economy in order to design out waste and keep products and materials in use. The recent progress of ICT technologies are thought as being able to boost this transition to a great extent. In the light of the above, the session will address 3 selected thematic clusters, i.e. DESIGN4R, CLOSING THE LOOPS and CONNECTED WORLD in order for the participants to exchange on state of the art situation and explore the opportunities/needs for R&I that may boost the transition towards a circular economy.

Some of the speakers and panelists from the EIT RawMaterials Community include Dr. David Peck, TU Delft, DPhil, MSc, Eng. Carlos Montalvo Corral, TNO Strategy and Policy, Karl Vrancken, VITO, Dr. Ignacio Calleja, EIT RawMaterials.
