Learn about innovative exploration drilling and data acquisition with I-EDDA project
This course will provide students and postgraduates knowledge on state-of-the-art methods and tools for borehole and drill core investigations and data handling. The course will take place between 1-5 November in Berlin, Germany. The deadline to submit applications is 15 October 2021. There is no fee to participate in the course. Purpose and intended learning outcome
This course will provide students and postgraduates knowledge that is required to optimally utilise drilling for exploration and research. It will:
- offer awareness about the data lifecycle in drilling campaigns
- present novel and established methods and tools for the acquisition and curation of data in boreholes, on drill core and samples
- provide the required background knowledge about operations at drill sites and in core repositories
This course conveys condensed content of the three planned I-EDDA-RS courses:
- 1.3 Geochemical methods in deep mineral exploration
- 3.2 Core characterization and geoscientific data
- 3.3 Novel methods for the handling of drilling/exploration data
which cannot be conducted in a feasible manner due to the pandemic situation and the cancellation of the I-EDDA-TC drilling project.
A basic understanding of solid Earth science or related sciences as well as experience in sampling and data acquisition and (exploration) drilling.

- Classroom and exercises will be at the National Core Repository of the Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources, BGR, Berlin Spandau
Content and modules
The lectures and exercises cover the following topics:
- Introduction to drilling, drill site (geo)scientific setup, common data types collected during drilling
- The lifecycle of data and samples: structured data acquisition and curation
- The Drilling Information System software
- Methods and data from the borehole (logging, testing)
- Novel instruments and data processing for drill core and cuttings analysis (geochemical, geophysical, optical)
- Utilising natural fluids and gases from boreholes
- Core-log-seismic integration
- Data archiving, release, publication and accessibility
- Unique identifiers, open/FAIR/linked data, data/metadata standards, data services
Preparation and assessment
No specific literature to be read prior to the course. Documentation will be distributed during the course. Participants are required to provide a report.
Interested individuals are requested to submit a brief statement of their interest (max 1 page), a CV, and a copy of their last academic degree as a single PDF file to firstname.lastname@example.org by October 15. Please use the same e-mail address if you have any questions.
A support letter from a supervisor is not mandatory for your application but may be included with the application. Priority will be given to students and postgraduates affiliated with EIT Raw Material organizations, but applications from other academic institutions and industries are welcome. A diverse mix of participants from the European Union and affiliated nations is desired. The course size is limited to 16 participants.

Travel and accommodation (room and board):
Selected participants will have to organize travel to Berlin on their own. If requested, the organizers may help participants for booking accommodation nearby the course venue. Travel to and from Berlin should be booked for the weekends framing the course starting on Monday morning and ending in the late afternoon on Friday.

Successful admissions will be considered for a stipend to offset costs of accommodation and food, and parts of the travel costs. There is no registration fee to participate in courses offered through I-EDDA-RS.
