The final edition of University Days in 2018 will take place in Italy at the University of Milano-Bicocca on 25 October 2018. The RMUD Milano-Bicocca 2018 wants to offer the public an interactive path through the different dimensions of Raw materials.

All activities aim at promoting university degrees concerning Raw Materials, research and its outcomes, researchers and their profession, with special attention paid to the youngest generations and to the recognition of the professional and economic use of raw materials.

The event will feature interactive stands, hands-on experiments and live demos that reconstruct the research environment; conferences, video projections, interactive games and guided visits to scientific university laboratories.

A special focus will be on high school students, for which a number of dedicated activities are foreseen, encouraging them to consider a research career in the field of raw materials.

Participants will get to know the raw materials, their origin and their usefulness in everyday life.

The value chain of raw materials will be illustrated through guided visits to the laboratories and practical experiences.

In particular, participants will become aware of issues related to the primary production of raw materials, including:

  • Evaluation of exploration resources and raw materials
  • Extraction in harsh environments and environmental impact assessment
  • Increased resource efficiency in mining and metallurgical processes
  • Use for the production and distribution of energy

Furthermore, information will be provided on the secondary production of raw materials including:

  • Recycling and optimization of the materials chain for end-of-life products
  • Substitution of critical and toxic materials in products and optimized performance
  • Design of products and services for the circular economy

Raw materials will be shown not only in terms of hard science but also with respect to the daily impact on all of our lives.

Exhibition of raw materials: a visual itinerary will be set up in the corridors of the University that will accompany visitors to discover where the raw materials come from, from the best known to the most unusual and sought-after in industry and technology.

Tour of the laboratories, with the possibility of visiting the laboratories of the University of Milano-Bicocca in small groups, to get to know the researchers and spend a few moments wearing lab coats in order to perform simple scientific experiments.

Job placement in companies in the raw materials sector: via the collaboration with Assolombarda (association of the Lombardy industries) and with the Regional Clusters, it will be possible to visit stands run by leading industries in the raw materials sector and discover the professional profiles required to work for such companies.

More information about the registration will follow soon.
