Weeefiner achieves scale-up breakthrough in industrial wastewater metal recovery

Backed by EIT RawMaterials, Finnish cleantech startup Weeefiner has achieved a major scale-up breakthrough by increasing the treatment capacity of its 4D Scavenger® technology tenfold. It is now generating customer revenue and building a growing pipeline of projects across metals recovery and industrial water treatment.

Global water demand is projected to rise by approximately 55% by 2050, while climate change continues to intensify water scarcity and regulatory pressure across industrial sectors. For mining, metals, and chemical companies, this pressure shows up on the balance sheet: treating contaminated process water is a costly burden, and the critical metals lost to wastewater sludge—materials essential for electrification, AI, and the energy transition—are routinely discarded during disposal.  

Weeefiner is built to change that equation. 

At the core of the startup's technology is the 4D Scavenger®, a modular, 3D-printed filtration system designed to selectively capture dissolved metals directly from industrial wastewater streams. Unlike conventional treatment methods such as chemical precipitation, ion exchange, or membrane filtration, the system is engineered for targeted metal recovery, producing both purified water and a high-purity metal concentrate that can be directly reused or requires only minimal downstream processing. The technology reduces hazardous waste generation by up to 90% and cuts overall wastewater treatment costs by up to 30%.

Proven at scale

Weeefiner has made significant progress in validating its 4D Scavenger® technology under real-world industrial conditions. The system has operated continuously for over 12 months in a full-scale commercial deployment at a flow rate of 5 m³/h—treating five cubic metres of water per hour—demonstrating the operational stability required for industrial operation.

This year, the startup achieved another major breakthrough. It has successfully scaled its technology to a flow rate of 50 m³/h—a tenfold increase in treatment capacity—while maintaining the same level of performance achieved at laboratory scale. This demonstrates that the technology can be scaled up without compromising efficiency or reliability, a key requirement for industrial deployment.

The startup's progress has attracted consistent external recognition in recent years. In May 2026, Weeefiner received the Nordic Innovation Award in Oslo, which honours companies that combine sustainable innovation with strong intellectual property. In 2025, it was also named the 17th fastest-growing technology company in Finland by Deloitte. 

Our recent progress shows that selective metal recovery from industrial wastewater is no longer just a laboratory concept. We want to help industry move from simply treating wastewater to recovering value from it, making metal recovery practical, scalable and economically attractive.

Scaling up with EIT RawMaterials  

In 2024, the startup won the Eramet Water Resource Innovation Challenge, organised by the global mining and metallurgical group Eramet in partnership with EIT RawMaterials. The win led to a pilot at Eramet's smelting facility in Norway, providing valuable validation in a demanding real-world environment.

Building on this engagement, EIT RawMaterials has continued to support Weeefiner’s development and scale-up efforts. The startup has received €800,000 in funding to accelerate the refinement and scale-up of its technology, and EIT RawMaterials is also supporting the startup in securing future funding.  

EIT RawMaterials has played a key role in helping Weeefiner turn our academic innovation into an industry-ready solution. Their support has enabled us to identify the key challenges in industrial water treatment, understand where critical raw materials are lost, and focus our development on the applications where our technology can deliver the greatest impact.

Gaining commercial momentum

Weeefiner's technological progress is now translating into commercial traction.  

The startup has generated €3 million in cumulative revenue, with €1.7 million in orders already booked for 2026. It has also recorded two consecutive years of positive EBITDA, indicating that operating revenues now exceed day-to-day costs.

Its sales pipeline has expanded to over 20 active opportunities across multiple industrial applications, including copper recovery, lithium recovery, and industrial water treatment. This momentum builds on industrial references and collaborations with companies such as Rio Tinto, Neste, Eramet, and NG Nordic. 

Weeefiner has taken a genuinely novel material science approach and built it into a full solution deployable on an industrial scale. The journey from lab to industrial pilot to commercial traction has been remarkable, and we are proud to have played a role in this endeavour.

With this foundation in place, Weeefiner is currently raising €5 million to support its transition from validated technology to repeatable commercial deployment, funding modular production scale-up, commercial expansion, and continued R&D to improve efficiency, output, and cost performance.

In addition to the traditional capital investment model, the startup offers Recovery-as-a-Service (RaaS) as a flexible option for customers seeking to avoid upfront capital expenditure. Under this model, more of the operational burden is shifted from the customer to Weeefiner, while deployment and operation are handled on-site, with pricing linked to recovery outcomes.

Weeefiner’s systems are delivered as container or skid installations, enabling flexible and scalable deployment across a wide range of industrial environments. Looking ahead, the startup has set an ambitious revenue target of €30 million by 2030, with a significant recurring revenue share.
