Innovation in Collection and Recovery of Permanent Magnets from EoL products
EIT RawMaterials-MAGELLAN Rare Earth Round Table Series-10
25 June 2026 | 13:00-14:30 CET
Don't miss the conversation that's shaping the future of Europe's rare earth magnet supply chain.
This Roundtable focuses on one of the most critical, yet often under-discussed, parts of Europe's secondary rare earth permanent magnet (REPM) value chain: the step between end-of-life products and the recovery of used magnet material — i.e. secondary rare earth elements (REE) feedstock.
The commercial and environmental viability of the entire secondary REPM chain depends on whether magnets can be collected, dismantled and recovered in sufficient volumes, at acceptable cost, and with enough quality consistency to create a reliable market. The session centres on technological and market innovations shaping this upstream segment.
Key focus areas
- Innovations improving identification, targeting and sorting of magnet-bearing end-of-life products and components before or during dismantling
- Sensor-based detection, AI-assisted sorting, digital support tools and product information systems to reduce uncertainty and improve selectivity
- Recovery efficiency in dismantling — knowing where valuable magnets are located and isolating the right product streams
- Practical and technical challenges in accessing magnets embedded in complex products
- How different technical approaches suit different levels of material heterogeneity and recycling routes
