CLC West Partner, KU Leuven, will host the Raw Materials University Day on 1 October 2017 in Leuven, Belgium. This CLC West/KU Leuven edition of Raw Materials University Days will coincide with the Belgian Open Days where in previous years, 300+ businesses and universities opened their doors to approximately 600.000 curious students, pupils, families and inquisitive groups keen to explore what their municipalities and regions have to offer. At the same time, the Open Days enable Belgian businesses and universities to illustrate to the public how they contribute to a sustainable Belgian society as well as pique the interest of potential future employees and students.

KU Leuven, therefore, intends to build on the reach and success of the Open Days and open the KU Leuven faculties to secondary school pupils aged 13-17. Local secondary schools and student groups such as the Scouts in Flanders will be targeted in advance to confirm participation in an exciting, interactive programme on the materials sciences and circular economy. Activities will include dismantling sessions of everyday products, such as mobile phones and laptops in order to expose students to the often-forgotten materials dimension of products that make possible our Western lifestyles. There will also be games and trivia on materials where students can win prizes. It is also envisaged to offer a hands-on MaterialsLaboratory where students can experiment with lab equipment under the direction of Master and PhD students. Finally, and most critically, students will be exposed to the exciting study opportunities and careers that await their futures should they choose to take their next steps in the study programmes KU Leuven has to offer.
