The aims of this four-day course are to uncover the potential of Earth observation and remote sensing as important tools for the raw materials community. It offers a hands-on approach to facilitate the comprehension of difficult concepts. The course provides remote sensing basics and potential applications in raw materials exploration, exploitation, processing, recycling and in monitoring and environmental impacts. Also covered are optical passive remote sensing and active remote sensing, with a focus on the freely available spaceborne acquisitions through the Copernicus programme (Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2) and the use of open-source software.

The course is part of the Copernicus RawMatCop project that aims to demonstrate new applications at the intersection between Earth observation data and the raw materials sector. It is funded by European Commission DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW), and EIT RawMaterials.

The course is for Beginners in Earth Observation Applications. By the end of the course, the participants will:

  • Acquire the basics of Earth Observation and remote sensing technology with an emphasis on the Copernicus programme and its services
  • Learn the use of open-source software for spaceborne image processing
  • Learn to use remote sensing to identify and map areas of interest in a mining environment
  • Learn the basics of remote sensing possibilities for exploration
  • Learn to recognize environmental challenges in the surroundings of mining sites using remote sensing
  • Acquire basic abilities to identify stability challenges in mining surroundings
  • Understand the challenges facing the raw materials value chain (exploration, extraction, processing, recycling, etc.) and how remote sensing can play a role in their future

Target Participants

The target audience for the course is any individual who is involved in the raw materials community and does not have a background in Earth Observation.

This includes:

  • employees of private companies
  • employees in the public sector
  • university students
  • researchers interested in venturing into this field.

Participants should have a good command of English, a background in science or engineering, and proficiency in computer use with basic programming skills.
