Join a short online course on Electromagnetic methods in deep mineral exploration!

The course will train the following abilities:

  • Derive the differential equations governing electromagnetic (EM) induction in the Earth starting from Maxwell’s equations.
  • Describe EM fields owing to controlled (galvanic and inductive) and natural sources.
  • Describe the fundamental properties of the impedance tensor and other transfer functions for controlled-source and natural EM fields accounting for galvanic distortion.
  • Apply time-series processing to EM data and evaluate data quality.
  • Explain the principles of numerical modelling like integral equation, thin-sheet, finite-difference and finite-element methods to solve forward problems in 2D and 3D.
  • Explain how models can be calculated using inversion.
  • Recommend a EM technique or a combination of EM techniques that is best suited to resolve a geological target at a given depth and in a given host medium.
  • Design field campaigns.

Target participants

PhD students affiliated with EIT RawMaterials organizations are prioritised but applications are welcomed from other academic institutions and industry. Mathematics and physics courses at BSc and MSc level equivalent are relevant for completing the course.

Application criteria and priority

  • A diverse mix of participants is desired.
  • Priority will be given to students affiliated with EIT Raw Material organizations, but applications are welcomed from other academic institutions and industry.
  • Course size is limited to 16 participants.
