Course description

The Management of Change Process. The nature and importance of change (both minor and paradigm changes), factors forcing change, resistance to change, planned change interventions, models of organisational change to include Lewin and more recent approaches. Key issues associated with successful change programmes. The role of organisational culture in the management of change process.

  • Appreciate the nature and importance of change within organisations
  • Comprehend the key theories associated with the management of change within modern organisations and integrate the basic steps in the change process
  • Develop and implement a broad strategy for introducing change
  • Analyse organisational culture and its impact upon change within the organisation
  • Critically evaluate key theories relating to the management of change
  • Identify elements of organisational culture and make suggestions as to the fit with the change effort. Embrace the change process and synthesise the values of change within oneself and within the organisation.

Course contents

The course is divided into three topics:

  1. Understanding Influencers of Change,
  2. Theoretical Perspectives of Change Management and
  3. The Process of Managing Change.

The underlying theories and concepts will be mainly covered in pre course guided reading and the workshops will focus upon the practical techniques of analysing the need for change, potential resistance to change, and developing a strategic plan for managing the change process.

The course is assessed with an Essay which is worth 100%. The aim of the assignment is designed to challenge the trainee to select an area in their managerial role where they wish to plan and implement a change, using theory and techniques covered within this course.

This individual based task should help develop the trainee’s skills (both analytical and descriptive) in the following areas:

  1. Planning and organising
  2. Developing a vision and strategy
  3. Anticipating resistance to change
  4. Strategic thinking on overcoming resistance to change
  5. Influencing and motivating others towards change
