On 10-11 December in Brindisi, the two-day International Workshop on Raw Materials in Circular Economy will promote sustainable use of raw materials in Southern Italy region. The workshop is organised in the European framework of the EIT RawMaterials Hub – Regional Center Southern Italy, coordinated by ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) and hosted at Brindisi Research Center, Italy.

The main focus of the EIT RawMaterials RIS Hub Southern Italy is devoted to recycling and reuse, substitution, functional materials for manufacturing, innovative materials for transportation, circular economy, including urban mining, exploration and high-impact cross-KIC activities in key interdisciplinary sectors such as climate, digital, manufacturing. The Strategic Agenda of the Hub includes specific initiatives such as research and innovation, training and education, and finally, business support.

Connecting business, research and education

The workshop aims to promote and support the regional ecosystem on raw materials and the efficient use of resources by connecting the stakeholders of the Knowledge Triangle (Business, Research, University) of the Mediterranean Area, giving an international dimension to interested companies and startups. The final goal is to enhance the ranking of Southern Italy, including the Mediterranean Area assigned by the European Innovation Scoreboard as “Moderate Innovation”.

EIT RawMaterials Innovation Community, as well as international scientific experts and company managers, will take part in the event. Institutional representatives and policymakers at local, national and international level (representatives from the European Commission, Ministries, Regions) are also invited, together with stakeholders in the Mediterranean Area, to increase awareness on the issues covered by the workshop and evaluate new possible joint actions.

The participation of EIT RawMaterials, Join Research Center (JRC), S3 Smart Specialisation Platform regional executives, innovators, researchers, startups, company managers, technical officers should be highlighted. The financial instruments made available by EIT RawMaterials for stakeholders of the EIT RawMaterials innovation ecosystem and cross-KIC (Climate, Digital, Food, Manufacturing) sector will be presented to promote upcoming Calls for Projects. During the second day, a visit to the ENEA laboratories and local S&T park will also be included.
